Pick
of the Day - Wilderness Men
In 1803, the race was on to find the
first passage from the east coast to the
west coast of America. Whoever found it
would control the trade route to China,
and President Thomas Jefferson was keen
to stake it for America. His personal
secretary Merriweather Lewis (sic) was
chosen, with colleague William Clarke
(sic), to lead an expedition across the
vast continent. What they discovered changed
the history of the US for ever. Through
their journals we have a snapshot of the
West before 'civilisation', and this wonderful
combination of dramatic reconstruction
plus contributions from authors, historians
and academics, with footage of beautiful
landscapes and wildlife, brings a long-gone
era back to life. It's the first in a
series about history's great explorers,
and the scale of the journey that Lewis
and Clarke (sic) undertook makes theirs
one of the most heroic.
